ModulTone

Independent tools, one idea

Mid/side processing, made visible.

Every plugin here processes the mid and side channels independently, and shows you the stereo field while it does it. For producers who already own twelve saturators and are tired of "warm analog character."

Why mid/side

One signal, treated as two.

Independent control, built for yourvocals, mix bus, master, drums, and full mix.

What's identical in both speakers is the mid. What's different between them is the side. Give each one its own controls, and a kick drum stops fighting a room reverb for the same knob.

Who's behind this

Built by a producer, not a company.

ModulTone is Ivo Janssen — a pop producer and mixer who needed his mixes bigger in the stereo field and couldn't find plugins that got him there quickly. So he started producing the tools himself, tested them on real mixes, and shipped the ones that actually worked.

MS Saturator

Flagship

Independent saturation for the mid and side channels.

Mid/side saturation solves a specific problem: adding harmonic weight to a mix without smearing the center image. Push the Mid channel through Tape for low-end glue, then drive the Side channel with Fuzz for width that doesn't fight the vocal or kick sitting dead-center. Five character modes per channel, driven independently, mean the same knob does something different on Mid than it does on Side — because on a real mix, it needs to.

  • Independent character modes for mid and side channels: Console, Tube, Tape, Drive, Fuzz
  • Extreme mode pushes each character stage past its normal range
  • Link ties mid and side drive to a single control

MS Widener

Free

Widen the stereo image without losing mono compatibility.

Most widener plugins are a single knob that either does nothing or falls apart the moment someone checks the mix in mono. This one splits the difference: width is applied above a bass crossover, so the low end stays centered and phase-safe while everything above it opens up. It's free because it's also the plugin that shows you what mid/side actually looks like before you commit to the paid ones — the built-in goniometer plots the stereo field in real time as you turn the knob, so width stops being something you only hear and starts being something you can see.

  • Width control from narrow to wide, 0–200%
  • Mono Beneath collapses low frequencies to mono below a set crossover, so bass stays centered
  • Retro and Huge modes for two different widening characters

MS Compressor

Independent compression for the mid and side channels, four detector types.

A mix bus compressor squashes everything the same way. This one doesn't have to: four detector types per channel mean the Mid can ride an Opto's slow, musical, program-dependent release while the Side gets an FET's fast grab on transients — two genuinely different compressors, doing two different jobs, on the same signal at the same time. Link them when you want one compressor's worth of control; split them the moment the mix asks for two.

  • Four compressor types per channel: VCA, Opto, FET, Bus
  • Independent threshold, ratio, attack, release, and makeup gain for mid and side
  • Link ties the mid and side compressors together with one control

ModulTone Dimension Chorus

Multi-voice chorus with a mono-safe design.

Chorus usually means choosing between two failure modes: too subtle to hear, or wide and lush right up until someone checks the mix in mono and it collapses to nothing. Dimension keeps the center dry and puts every detuned voice in the sides, so the effect is genuinely audible in stereo and genuinely gone — not thinned, gone — the instant you sum to mono. Five modes run from a barely-there 2-voice shimmer to an 8-voice wash, plus Bass and Dim modes built specifically for material that can't afford to lose low-end mono compatibility.

  • Five modes: 2, 4, and 8-voice chorus, plus Bass and Dim modes
  • Mono Safe design keeps the effect from collapsing or phasing out in mono
  • Rate can free-run or sync to host tempo, in note divisions

MS ClipExpander

Clip, limit, or expand the mid and side channels independently.

Limiting a master bus is a compromise: catch the loud parts hard enough and the quiet parts get sucked along for the ride. Running Mid and Side through separate stages breaks that trade-off apart — the kick and bass, mostly sitting in Mid, get caught on their own terms, while the width and air in the Side channel aren't ducked every time the low end hits. Four modes per channel, independent drive and ceiling on each, and 'catch the peaks' and 'protect the width' stop being the same knob.

  • Four modes per channel: Soft Clip, Hard Clip, Limit, Expand
  • Independent drive and ceiling for mid and side
  • True Peak detection catches inter-sample peaks
